Paints

Choosing your first paints

Start with a limited palette and learn to mix — it teaches more than forty ready-made colours.

  • Acrylic dries in minutes and cleans up with water.
  • Oil stays workable for days and blends softly.
  • Student grade is fine for practice; artist grade carries more pigment.

Picking the right brush

Match the hair to the medium, then the shape to the mark you want to make.

  • Hog bristle holds thick oil and texture.
  • Soft synthetics suit acrylic glazes and watercolour.
  • Wash in soapy water and dry flat, never head-down.

Understanding primed canvas

Primer — usually acrylic gesso — seals the fabric so paint sits on top instead of soaking in.

  • Universal priming works for both oil and acrylic.
  • Fine grain suits portraits and detail; coarse grain suits bold work.
  • Cotton is lighter on the wallet; linen is more stable.
